Whether you've got a small patio in the city, a neighborhood plot in the suburbs, or a few acres to call your own, making small tweaks to promote wildlife on your slice of property can be a rewarding endeavor. The Certified Wildlife Habitat program from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is a self-guided program that encourages wildlife stewardship and sustainable practices.
What to do:
- The NWF checklist guides you through the essential categories of Food, Water, Cover, Places to Raise Young, and Sustainable Practices.
- Once you've determined you meet enough criteria or have made (and committed to) the appropriate changes, register your habitat with the NWF!
- Consider purchasing a Certified Wildlife Habitat sign to spark a conversation around sustainability, help keep you committed to the practices, and boost your garden swag (proceeds help benefit NWF's conservation efforts).
- We'd love to see what you've done. Send us a photo or tag @cotoverde with your NWF habitat!
