How to Turn your Property into a Certified Wildlife Habitat

Whether you've got a small patio in the city, a neighborhood plot in the suburbs, or a few acres to call your own, making small tweaks to promote wildlife on your slice of property can be a rewarding endeavor. The Certified Wildlife Habitat program from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is a self-guided program that encourages wildlife stewardship and sustainable practices.

What to do:

  1. The NWF checklist guides you through the essential categories of Food, Water, Cover, Places to Raise Young, and Sustainable Practices.
  2. Once you've determined you meet enough criteria or have made (and committed to) the appropriate changes, register your habitat with the NWF!
  3. Consider purchasing a Certified Wildlife Habitat sign to spark a conversation around sustainability, help keep you committed to the practices, and boost your garden swag (proceeds help benefit NWF's conservation efforts).
  4. We'd love to see what you've done. Send us a photo or tag @cotoverde with your NWF habitat!
